Rock Specifications

LA Abrasion Test(ASTM C535): Degradation of the Shaw Creek rock sample.

*The lower the number, the higher durability of the rock.*

Specific Gravity (SSD) Test(ASTM C127):  The rock's pores are filled with water in this test(Saturated Surface Dry). After soaking the rock in water for a specific duration, the density and absorption can be calculated.  Normally the minimum Specific Gravity value allowed on projects is 2.65. Limestone normally ranges between 2.40 and 3.00.

*The higher the Specific Gravity number is, the more durable the rock is.*
*The lower the absorption % is, the more durable the rock is.*

Magnesium Sulfate Soundness Test(ASTM C88): The rock sample is immersed in a magnesium sulfate for a period of time. The loss of weight is recorded between original sample before and after the test.

*The lower the % loss of weight the better.  It is even possible for the rock sample to weigh the same as before the sulfate solution  was applied.*
